What's rockin' on TV on New Year's EveDick Clark will ring in the new year for the 35th time.By Rick Bentley / The Fresno Bee12/29/06 04:48:23 A normal New Year's Eve for Cat Deeley would find her hanging out with a few of her buddies back in England. This year is different. She will be hanging out with thousands of rowdy revelers in Times Square. Deeley, best known for her work on the Fox series "So You Think You Can Dance," will be in New York on Sunday night to host the network's New Year's Eve special. The Fox countdown to 2007 begins at 11 p.m. Sunday night on KMPH, Channel 26. It is one of several network specials that will be ringing in the new year. Until just a few weeks ago, Deeley thought she would have just another normal New Year's Eve. "I was at the airport on my way home for the holidays," Deeley says during a telephone interview before Christmas. "That's when I got a telephone call telling me I could go home for Christmas but I had to be back on an airplane Dec. 26." Deeley is no stranger to hosting big events. Along with the Fox reality show, she has been the guiding hand for some of the United Kingdom's hottest prime-time programs: "Stars in Their Eyes," "CD:UK Live," "SMTV: Live," "Comic Relief Does Fame Academy," the "V Festival," "The Brits" and "Record of the Year." The trick to being able to deal with such chaotic situations is preparation. "You know even if you make a mistake that everything is going to be OK because you have prepared. If you are prepared, then you can have fun. You are not spending all your time worrying about what you are going to do next," Deeley says. But with her New Year's Eve television job, it's her mother she's concerned about. "I told them my mum was going to crucify me if I didn't come home for the holidays. They told me I could bring her to New York with me. But that is really going to be a hectic time," Deeley says. Deeley hopes that her mom will understand the opportunity she's been given. Deeley will be the only solo female host of any of the network New Year's offerings and she will see firsthand the chaos that comes with being in Times Square. The closest thing Great Britain has is the group that gathers at London's Trafalgar Square to lock arms, sing "Auld Lang Syne" and then jumps into a fountain. The Fox show will feature performances by Toni Braxton and "American Idol" alumnus Chris Daughtry. Deeley also will take a look back at 2006's most memorable moments in pop culture. She's hosting her first New Year's Eve TV special, and that puts her 34 years behind television icon Dick Clark in hosting a holiday special to ring in the new year. As for whether she could see herself in Times Square hosting the countdown in 34 years, Deeley laughs and says that would only happen if technology can make her look younger. Here's what some of the other networks have planned for New Year's Eve: Dick Clark will ring in the New Year at ABC for the 35th consecutive year with "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2007." Clark and Ryan Seacrest will host three and a half hours of specials starting at 10 p.m. on KFSN, Channel 30. Christina Aguilera, Rascal Flatts, Rihanna, Ludacris, KT Tunstall and Broadway's "Jersey Boys" will perform live in Times Square. The West Coast portion will feature Fergie, Natasha Bedingfield, RBD and Meat Loaf. NBC has started building its own tradition when it comes to New Year's Eve. Carson Daly will host the third annual "NBC's New Year's Eve with Carson Daly" starting at 11:30 p.m. on KSEE, Channel 24. The one-hour special will include performances by Panic! At the Disco plus coverage of activities at Times Square. It will be simulcast on MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo. The Las Vegas-based Panic! has sold more than 1.3 million copies of its debut album. Telefutura, seen locally on KTFF, Channel 61, will broadcast the seven-hour special "Escandalo de Año Nuevo." It will originate live from Miami, Times Square in New York, Los Angeles, Mexico and Puerto Rico beginning at noon. Charytín Goyco, Marisa del Portillo, Felipe Viel and Maribel Guardia will host the show that features special guests RBD, Ninel Conde, Mariana Seoane, Graciela Beltrán, Jenni Rivera, Pablo Montero, Banda el Recodo, Los Tigres del Norte, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Chelo, Fonseca, Pedro Fernández, Giselle, Rogelio Martínez, Patricia Manterola, Kumbia AllStarz, Control, Lucero, R.K.M & Ken-Y, Horóscopos de Durango and N'Klabe. Univision, seen locally on KFTV, Channel 21, will ring in the new year with "Feliz 2007!" The program airs 10 p.m.-1:30 a.m. and is hosted by Don Francisco. He will be joined by co-hosts Gisell Blondet, Ana Maria Canseco, Raul Gonzalez, Rafael Mercandante and Alessandra Rosaldo. Special guests will include David Bisbal, Chelo, Los Horoscopos de Durango, Fonseca, Ilegales, Pablo Montero, Alacranes Musical and Mariana Seoane.
